(Grade 6)
Once upon a time, in 1789 there lived a family of four. The family lived in a
little cottage deep in the woods in France. There was Danielle (the mom),
André (the stepbrother), and Marie (the littlest sister). André's dad had died
from Scarlet Fever. André did all the work in the house while Danielle and
Marie just watched. André was very miserable and he didn't like his life.
He wanted to get married so bad he didn't care to whom.
One day André went for a walk into town to pick up some bread. All of a
sudden a horse came trotting down the road with Princess Rottinate sitting
on its back. A crowd had gathered so André moved around trying to get a
better look. Once he saw the princess's face he fell in love with her in an
instant.
"My good people," Rottinate said, "I am holding a bake sale contest, and
whoever bakes the most horrible thing gets to be my husband!"
André smiled a wide smile and thought she has a sense of humour too!
André ran home as fast as he could and hoped that maybe he would be able
to win the princess's approval.
Once André reached the house he went directly into the kitchen to look for
ingredients. He put salt, flour, baking soda, and baking powder into a bowl,
but he couldn't find anything disgusting. André was discouraged so he went
to lie down. Suddenly, Marie came into the kitchen and thought that she
would play a mean trick. She went outside and collected disgusting things.
She put worms, caterpillars, insects, dead frogs, and slugs into the mixing
bowl and then she went outside to play.
When André came back to the kitchen he decided to bake just an ordinary
cake not knowing what else was in the bowl. When the cake was ready he
decided to give it as a gift to the princess anyway. Later that day André
went to the castle, and he saw the princess sampling the gross dishes.
The princess was about to announce the winner when André held out his
cake to her. André said, "Princess Rottinate, I am sorry that I could not
make you a disgusting dish, but please accept this cake as a token of my
love."
The princess tasted the food and said, "Oh André, it's delicious! I think I am
in love with you!"
"What?" replied André, "I thought the winner was
supposed to make disgusting food, but my dish was
delicious!"
"But André, there are all these dead creatures in
here that make it delicious for me!" said Princess
Rottinate as she held up a dead frog!
André fainted and when he woke up he was informed that he had won the
contest and was to marry the princess.
André spent the rest of his life feeling sick every time Princess Rottinate had
dinner. André realized that Princess Rottinate didn't have a good sense of
humour after all!
